Biography:
Derrek, who was acquired in the 2003 offseason from the Florida Marlins, has hit at least 20 homers in eight of his last nine seasons ... is a two-time All-Star (2005, 2007) and three-time Gold Glove winner (2003, 2005, 2007). © Is the seventh Cub in franchise history to win multiple Gold Glove Awards and the second player to do so at first base (Mark Grace - 1992, 1993, 1995 and 1996). © His 559 extra base hits as a first baseman since the start of the 2000 season rank third-most behind Todd Helton (662) and Carlos Delgado (632). © Doubled in eight-straight games, April 23-May 2, 2007 ... became the first major leaguer in at least 50 years to record a double in eight games in a row ... since 1957, only six other big leaguers have doubled in as many as seven games in a row. © Owns a .994 career fielding percentage in 1,505 games at first base. © Was honored with the Louisville Slugger Silver Bat Award (presented annually to each league's batting champion) and a Silver Slugger Award in 2005. © Is a 1993 graduate of El Camino (Calif.) High School ... turned down a basketball scholarship to the University of North Carolina to play baseball. © His father, Leon, served as the Cubs' Pacific Rim coordinator from 1998- 2002 ... his uncle, Leron, spent parts of 10 seasons in the majors with St. Louis (1969-71), San Diego (1971-73), Cleveland (1974-75) and the Los Angeles Dodgers (1975-76). © Named to the Arizona Fall League Hall of Fame in 2007. © Created a foundation in 2006 to fight Leber's Congenital Amaurosis (LCA), a degenerative disease that results in loss of vision ... the effort, entitled "Project 3000," includes a plan to raise money to provide stateof- the-art genetic testing for every man, woman and child in the United States with LCA - about 3,000 individuals in all. Also had an eight-game hitting streak, May 19-27, in which he batted .351 (13-for-37). © Of his 20 home runs, 15 were hit at Wrigley Field ... hit .287 at the Friendly Confines compared to a .294 average on the road. Homered in four straight home games, April 5-16. © His 181 hits ranked sixth in the N.L. © After belting 15 homers in his first 73 games, had five homers in his final 82 contests. © Had a .306 batting average against left-handed hurlers (44-for-144) ... posted a .286 average against righthanders (137-for-479). © Hit .306 (117-for-382) with 15 homers and 56 RBI prior to the All-Star Game ... batted .266 with five homers and 34 RBI following the break (64-for-241). © Had a .993 fielding percentage in 153 games at first base (9 E/1312 TC) ... tallied a .996 fielding percentage in his final 120 contests dating to May 7 (4 E/978 TC). © Tied the franchise record with his eighth home run in April when he went deep off Ben Sheets April 29 vs. Milwaukee. Joined Sammy Sosa (2000, 2002) and Lee Walls (1958) as the only Cubs to hit eight April homers. © Posted a .288 batting average June 1 through the end of the season after hitting .234 (29-for-124) in May ... batted .301 (28-for-93) in August and .274 (23-for-84) in September. © Hit into 27 double plays, tying the franchise mark set by Ron Santo in 1973. © Belted his first homer of the season April 2 vs. Milwaukee in his second game of the season, seventh at-bat, off Jeff Suppan. In 2007, he didn't hit his first homer until his 21st game, April 25 vs. Milwaukee. © Hit his 10th homer of the season May 11 vs. Arizona ... in 2007, didn't hit his 10th homer until July 28 in Cincinnati (92nd game). © Scored his 800th career run May 24 at Pittsburgh. © Belted his 250th career home run May 26 vs. Los Angeles (off Chad Billingsley). © June 28 matched his career high with five hits against the White Sox - now has four five-hit games in his career ...
