COACHING CAREER
Named BOS's pitching coach on 11/7/12.
Joined the Red Sox after 14 seasons in the White Sox organization, including spending the last 5 years from
2008-12 as the CWS's bullpen coach.
Working with long-time pitching coach Don Cooper, helped tutor a White Sox pitching staff that posted the
6th-best ERA in the American League (4.08) from 2008-12 with the bullpen's 3.88 ERA ranking 5th in the AL in
that time...CWS's pitching staff set club records in strikeouts each of the past 3 years, including a franchise-best
1,246 K's in 2012...The White Sox' bullpen set a record with 479 strikeouts in 2011.
In 2012, oversaw a CWS bullpen that used 8 rookies before September...Included in that group were setup
man Nate Jones, who went 8-0 with a 2.39 ERA and tied for the major league lead in relief victories, and closer
Addison Reed, who tied for 7th in the AL with 29 saves.
Served 9 years from 1999-2007 as a pitching coach in Chicago's minor league system with stops at Rookielevel Tucson (1999-2001), Double-A Birmingham (2002-04), and Triple-A Charlotte (2005-07).
Was chosen as the World Team's pitching coach for the 2006 All-Star Futures Game in PIT...In 2002, was the
pitching coach for the Southern League West Division All-Star Team.
In 1998-99, was the general manager/manager for Caguas in the Puerto Rican Winter League.
Began coaching career in the Yankees organization, holding the positions of pitching coach with Rookie-level
Tampa (1992), Short-A Oneonta (1993), and Single-A Greensboro (1994, 1996), and pitching coordinator with
Double-A Norwich (1995).
PLAYING CAREER
Signed by MIL in 1983, left-hander pitched 3 major league seasons with the Brewers from 1986-88 and compiled a 32-25 record with 1 save, a 4.71 ERA and 352 strikeouts in 94 games (81 starts).
Set career-highs with 14 wins, 195.2 innings, and 163 strikeouts in 1987, when he ranked 5th in the American
League with an average of 7.5 strikeouts per 9.0 innings pitched.
Became the 1st pitcher in Brewers history and 1st native of Puerto Rico to throw a no-hitter when he accomplished the feat at age 22 on 4/15/87 at BAL.
Tied for 4th in the AL with 3 shutouts as a rookie in 1986...Named Texas League Pitcher of the Year in 1985
with Double-A El Paso.
MISCELLANEOUS/PERSONAL Married to Marilia...Has 4 children: Natalia, Alondra, Marilia, and Isabella. Graduated from Avon Old Farms High School in Connecticut in 1983...Compiled a career record of 19-1 with a 1.05 ERA in 3 years at the school...In addition to baseball, captained the cross-country and basketball teams... Is in Avon Old Farms High School's Hall of Fame.
