Former Cardinals starter Jason Marquis had his former club's number early in his first start since throwing seven shutout innings at his former teammates. Backed by two-run homers from Aramis Ramirez and Felix Pie, Marquis was stellar before running into trouble in the seventh inning. Closer Ryan Dempster worked five tough outs to earn his fourth save of the season.

Reyes bested in battle

Anthony Reyes worked around his traditional nemesis, the early innings, to run into trouble in the fourth, when the Cubs hit two two-run homers. Reyes gave up just four hits before leaving after six; Yadier Molina's seventh-inning homer drew the Cards close, but they wasted chances in the eighth and ninth innings.
