Schierholtz having season worthy of All-Star nod
Cubs outfielder, on ballot for the first time, needs more support from voters

CHICAGO -- David DeJesus was the most consistent player on the Cubs, and appeared to be the one position player who might make the National League All-Star team. But DeJesus' recent injury most likely knocked him out of the July 16 All-Star Game. Fans may want to jump on the Nate Schierholtz bandwagon.
Schierholtz leads the Cubs in batting average with runners in scoring position, is second in home runs and doubles, and recently hit two triples in a game. He ranks among the top 10 National League outfielders in OPS and extra-base hits, and he is among the top 15 in batting average.
DeJesus may not want to return to Citi Field, site of the All-Star Game, after he sprained his right shoulder when he slammed into the center-field wall on Friday. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list and will undergo an MRI Monday.
"It's a guy who has one of the better OPS's [for] a leadoff hitter in the game," Cubs manager Dale Sveum said of DeJesus. "When you lose that, you're obviously losing a mainstay in the lineup."
Neither DeJesus nor Schierholtz were listed among the top 15 NL outfielders in the latest fan and online All-Star balloting, released Sunday. The Cardinals' Carlos Beltran and the Braves' Justin Upton are ranked 1-2 in the most recent totals, both receiving more than 2 million votes.
There are no Cubs players in the top five at any position, and pitcher Travis Wood could ultimately get the All-Star nod for the Cubs. The left-hander has posted quality starts in 12 of his 13 outings. Fans do not vote for the pitchers.
"If you had to say one guy -- because of the consistency -- it would have to be Travis Wood," Sveum said.
Other Cubs on the NL All-Star ballot include two-time All-Star Starlin Castro, first baseman Anthony Rizzo, second baseman Darwin Barney, third baseman Luis Valbuena, catcher Welington Castillo and outfielder Alfonso Soriano. Soriano, 37, is a seven-time All-Star, while this is the first time Rizzo, Valbuena, Castillo and Schierholtz are on the ballot.
The 2013 All-Star Game will be played at Citi Field on Tuesday, July 16. MLB.com will have extensive online coverage of the All-Star Week festivities.
Fans can cast their votes for starters at MLB.com and all 30 club sites -- online or via a mobile device -- using the 2013 All-Star Game MLB.com Ballot until Thursday, July 4, at 10:59 p.m. CT.
Fans may submit 25 online ballots during the voting period but can also earn a one-time bonus of 10 additional online ballots. The 2013 Home Run Derby -- part of Gatorade All-Star Workout Day -- will be broadcast live on ESPN, ESPN HD, ESPN Deportes and ESPN Radio in the United States beginning at 7 p.m. CT on Monday, July 15.
Though originally scheduled for July 7, the 2013 rosters will now be unveiled Saturday, July 6, at 6:30 p.m. ET on the 2013 MLB All-Star Game Selection Show presented by Taco Bell. The show will be televised nationally on FOX.

During the Midsummer Classic, fans will vote exclusively online at MLB.com via the 2013 All-Star Game MLB.com MVP Vote, and their voice will represent 20 percent of the official vote determining the recipient of the Arch Ward Trophy.
