By Carrie Muskat / MLB.com
Yaneza Aguinaga and her supporting nonprofit organization, Christopher House, were presented $55,000 at a Sun Life Rising Star Awards presentation. Christopher House received a $50,000 grant, with Aguinaga receiving a $5,000 Sun Life Rising Star college scholarship for her educational achievements and commitment to her community.
The Sun Life Rising Star Awards program recognizes nonprofits that redress low high school graduation rates and outstanding students who have overcome significant obstacles to succeed. The program also promotes financial literacy as a means to achieving lifelong financial wellness and stability.
Wrigley Field to add seats behind home plate
CHICAGO -- Wrigley Field will get some extra seats behind home plate and may be able to host football games in the future.
The Commission on Chicago Landmarks' permit-review committee voted, 5-1, in favor of the Cubs' plan to move the brick wall behind home plate forward three feet to create 56 seats.
According to Crain's Chicago Business, the team also received permission to reconfigure a nearly 12-foot-long section of the wall along the third-base line so it would become movable. By doing so, Wrigley Field could be better fitted for college football games.
In November 2010, Illinois and Northwestern played at Wrigley and were forced to use only one end zone because the NCAA determined there wasn't a safe distance between the back of the east end zone and the brick outfield wall.
Michael Lufrano, vice president of community affairs and general counsel for the Cubs, said that alterations to the wall will be made in the offseason.
Hoyer gets new assistant GM in Rehman
CHICAGO -- The Cubs promoted Shiraz Rehman to assistant general manager, reporting to GM Jed Hoyer, on Thursday.
The team now will have two assistant GMs in Rehman and Randy Bush, who will continue to serve in the role he has held since December 2006.
Rehman, 34, joined the Cubs in November as assistant to the GM after six seasons with the D-backs, where he was director of player personnel. He also held the titles of director of baseball operations (2009-10) and manager of baseball operations (2007-08) after joining the D-backs as a baseball operations assistant in December 2005.
