Cintron hit in face by foul ball

Infielder walks off field; status is day-to-day

MESA, Ariz. -- Cubs infielder Alex Cintron was taken to a local hospital for X-rays after he was hit in the face by a foul ball while standing in the on-deck circle Friday in a Cactus League contest against the Angels.

Mark DeRosa led off the Chicago sixth and fouled the third pitch back toward the on-deck circle, where Cintron was standing. The ball struck him on the right side of his face, below his cheekbone, and he fell to the ground. Cubs athletic trainer Mark O'Neal came out to treat Cintron, who was able to walk off the field.

"It was scary," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. "He got lucky that it wasn't under the cheek bone under the eye."

Cintron was being treated for swelling, and his status was day-to-day.

Meanwhile, infielder Ronny Cedeno was not available Friday because of a tight hamstring.
