The Cubs also designated infielder Brian Dopirak, currently at Class A Daytona, for assignment. In addition, pitcher Wade Miller has been placed on waivers to grant his unconditional release.
Patterson was batting .299 at Triple-A Iowa with 14 homers, 23 doubles, 62 RBIs and 16 stolen bases. He has primarily hit leadoff all season, batting .300 in the No. 1 spot in the order with a .365 on-base percentage.
Patterson, 24, began the season as a second baseman, but has played the past 10 games in the outfield in both left and center.
He is the younger brother of former Cubs outfielder Corey Patterson, who is now with the Baltimore Orioles.
Soriano strained his right quad Sunday night running the bases and is expected to be sidelined at least two weeks and possibly a month.
Patterson will wear uniform No. 3 and looks to make his Major League debut Monday in Houston when the Cubs face the Astros at 7:05 p.m. CT.
