CHICAGO -- The Chicago Cubs today activated right-handed pitcher Carlos Zambrano from the 15-day disabled list and optioned right-handed pitcher Esmailin Caridad to Triple-A Iowa.

Zambrano will make the start tonight against the Washington Nationals at Wrigley Field.

The righthander is 7-4 with a 3.35 ERA (46 ER/123.2 IP) in 20 starts with the Cubs this season. He has not pitched since August 1 at Florida, when he departed after 3.0 innings due to muscle spasms in his back. He was scratched from his next scheduled start August 7 in Colorado and placed on the disabled list the next day.

Zambrano is unbeaten in his last five starts, posting a 3-0 record and a 2.93 ERA (9 ER/27.2 IP) in those outings. He made one rehab start with Single-A Peoria last Thursday, tossing 5.0 scoreless innings and allowing four hits with no walks and five strikeouts.

This marked Zambrano's second stint on the disabled list this season; he was previously on the list from May 4-22 with a left hamstring strain.

Caridad posted no record and a 3.68 ERA (3 ER/7.1 IP) in three relief appearances with the Cubs. The Cubs originally selected his contract from Triple-A on August 10, where he is 5-10 with a 4.15 ERA (58 ER/125.2 IP) in 23 starts with Iowa this season.
