CHICAGO -- The Chicago Cubs today selected infielder Bobby Scales from Triple-A Iowa. In a corresponding roster move, right-handed pitcher Carlos Zambrano has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a left hamstring strain.

Scales, 31, is batting .303 (23-for-76) with five doubles, a triple, three homers and 10 RBI in 21 games for Iowa this season, his second in the Cubs organization. He owns a .372 on-base percentage and is 10-for-26 (.385) against left-handed pitching while appearing at first base, second base and third base.

A veteran of 11 minor league seasons, Scales looks to make his major league debut. Since he was selected by San Diego in the 14th round of the 1999 Draft, Scales has hit .285 (942-for-3,303) with 207 doubles, 41 triples, 65 home runs and 425 RBI in 1,013 minor league contests. He has seen action with four organizations: San Diego (1999-2005), Philadelphia (2006), Boston (2007) and the Cubs (2008-2009).

In 2008, Scales set career marks with Iowa, hitting .320 with 94 runs, 59 walks and a .415 on-base percentage in 121 contests. He finished tied for eighth in the Pacific Coast League batting race, tied for second in runs and was fifth in on-base percentage.

Scales, a switch-hitter and right-handed thrower, will wear uniform No. 24, and is available for tonight's game at Wrigley Field against the San Francisco Giants at 7:05 p.m. CT.

Zambrano, 27, is 3-1 with a 4.50 ERA (19 ER/38.0 IP) in six starts for Chicago this season. He was injured legging out a bunt single in the fifth inning of yesterday's 6-4 victory against the Florida Marlins.
