Cubs, outfielder Reed Johnson agree to terms on 2009 contract

CHICAGO -- The Chicago Cubs and outfielder Reed Johnson have agreed to terms on a 2009 contract. Johnson was to be eligible for salary arbitration. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Signed by the Cubs last March 25 after being released by the Toronto Blue Jays, Johnson batted .303 (101-for-333) with 21 doubles, six home runs and 50 RBI in 109 games with the Cubs last season. He appeared in 77 games (64 starts) in center field, 26 games (12 starts) in left field and six games (one start) in right field, as the Cubs combined to post a .688 winning percentage (53-24) in his 77 starts. He was on the disabled list from June 18-July 3 with lower back spasms and batted .342 (52-for-152) in his final 53 games the rest of the way upon his return.
Johnson, 32, batted .333 (49-for-147) against left-handed pitching last season and is a career .313 hitter (265-for-848) vs. southpaws. He hit .556 (5-for-9) with the bases loaded and .358 (34-for-95) with runners in scoring position in 2008. He batted .300 or better in three consecutive months starting in June, capped by a .397 (23-for-58) batting average in 22 games in August.
Overall, Johnson has batted .284 (686-for-2418) with 135 doubles, 14 triples, 48 home runs, and a .344 on-base percentage in all or part of six major league seasons with the Blue Jays (2003-07) and Cubs, covering 719 games.
