Cubs activate Soriano, Eyre
Option Hoffpauir, Hart to Triple-A Iowa
CHICAGO -- The Chicago Cubs today activated outfielder Alfonso Soriano and left-handed pitcher Scott Eyre from the 15-day disabled list and optioned infielder Micah Hoffpauir and right-handed pitcher Kevin Hart to Triple-A Iowa.
Soriano returns to the Cubs line-up exactly six weeks to the day of suffering a minimally displaced fracture of his left fourth metacarpal in his left hand. He made rehab appearances with Rookie-level Mesa (Monday) and Triple-A Iowa (yesterday).
Eyre was on the disabled list since June 28 with a strained left groin. He made rehab appearances at Single-A Peoria (two appearances, one start) and Mesa (one relief appearance).
Soriano endured the finger fracture on June 11 at Wrigley Field in the bottom of the second inning when hit by a pitch thrown by Atlanta's Jeff Bennett. He is batting .283 (60-for-212) with 11 doubles, 15 home runs and 40 RBI in 51 games for the Cubs this season. Soriano returns from the disabled list for the second time this year, as he was sidelined for 15 days from April 16-30 with a right calf strain.
Elected by the fans to start the 2008 All-Star Game for the National League, Soriano attended last week's festivities at Yankee Stadium but was not active. Despite the injury, he was selected to his seventh All-Star Game in a row, his fifth time as a starter. He was selected to the N.L. All-Star team as a reserve last year in his first season with the Cubs. He was also selected as an All-Star starter in 2002-04 (second base) and 2006 (outfield).
Eyre is 2-0 with a 4.91 ERA (6 ER/11.0 IP) in 18 relief appearances for Chicago this season. His franchise-record 33 consecutive scoreless relief outings, which began August 16, 2007, was snapped June 15 in Toronto. He last appeared for the Cubs on June 26 vs. Baltimore.
Hoffpauir has batted .378 (14-for-37) with six doubles, one RBI and eight runs scored in 19 games covering three stints with the Cubs this season. He is hitting .358 (53-for-148) with 11 homers and 52 RBI in 36 games with Triple-A Iowa.
Hart is 2-1 with a 7.91 ERA (17 ER/19.1 IP) in 14 relief appearances covering three stints with the Cubs this season. He is 2-1 with a 3.35 ERA (15 ER/40.1 IP) in 10 appearances, all starts, with Iowa this season.
