CINCINNATI -- The Chicago Cubs today announced that the club has recalled outfielder Matt Murton and right-handed pitcher Rocky Cherry from Triple-A Iowa. In corresponding roster moves, the Cubs have optioned right-handed pitcher Billy Petrick and catcher/infielder Jake Fox to Iowa.

Murton, 25, is hitting .331 (50-for-151) with 16 doubles, six home runs and 27 RBI in 39 games with Iowa. He has a .407 on-base percentage and a .570 slugging percentage with the team since he was optioned to Iowa June 13. The right-handed batter had eight consecutive two-hit games from July 13-20, batting .457 (16-for-35) in that span.

Murton began the season with the big league club and hit .252 (30-for-119) with seven doubles and eight RBI in 49 games for Chicago prior to his option. In 2006, he batted .297 (135-for-455) with 22 doubles, 13 home runs and 62 RBI in 144 games for the Cubs.

Cherry, 27, begins his third stint with Chicago in his rookie season, having gone 1-1 with a 2.38 ERA (3 ER/11.1 IP) in nine major league relief appearances between April 23-May 15 and June 30. He was on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right lat from July 1-18, then optioned to Iowa.

With the I-Cubs this season, Cherry has gone 2-0 with four saves and a 5.55 ERA (22 ER/35.2 IP) in 30 games (one start) this season. That includes a 2.57 ERA (2 ER/7.0 IP) in five July contests. The Dallas, Texas native has not allowed a run in six of his last seven outings dating to June 26, producing a 2.00 ERA (2 ER/9.0 IP) in that span.

Petrick, 23, is a native of Kankakee, Ill., and has no record and a 7.45 ERA (8 ER/9.2 IP) in eight relief appearances with the Cubs this season. He began the year with Double-A Tennessee, going 1-1 with two saves and 2.37 ERA (8 ER/30.1 IP) in 18 relief appearances. With Iowa this season, Petrick has tossed 6.1 scoreless innings over four relief appearances from July 6-14.

Fox, 25, made his major league debut as a pinch-hitter July 19 vs. San Francisco and has appeared in two games with Chicago. The right-handed batter began the season with Tennessee, batting .284 (102-for-359) with 23 doubles, 18 home runs and 60 RBI in 91 games for the Smokies.
