Cubs recall right-hander Carlos Marmol from Triple-A Iowa
Option infielder Mike Fontenot to Iowa

CHICAGO -- The Chicago Cubs today recalled right-handed pitcher Carlos Marmol from Triple-A Iowa and optioned infielder Mike Fontenot (FONT-uh-no) to Iowa.
Marmol, 24, is 4-1 with a 3.95 ERA (18 ER/41.0 IP) in eight games (seven starts) for Iowa this season, walking 12 and striking out 48 in 41.0 innings of work. He has held the opposition to a .204 batting average (30-for-147) and has surrendered just one walk over his last three outings (14.1 IP).
Originally signed by the Cubs as a non-drafted free agent in July of 1999, Marmol made his Major League debut in 2006, going 5-7 with a 6.08 ERA (52 ER/77.0 IP) in 19 games (13 starts) for the Cubs. He earned the victory in his first career start June 11 at Cincinnati and later struck out a career-high eight batters June 28 vs. Milwaukee.
Marmol, who will wear uniform number 49, will be available for today's 1:20 p.m. CT game against the White Sox at Wrigley Field.
Fontenot, 26, was selected by the Cubs this past Tuesday and collected his first career Major League hit that night with an eighth inning, pinch-double off New York's Ambiorix Burgos. The infielder is hitting .364 (47-for-129) with six home runs and 27 RBI in 35 games with Iowa this season.
