Righthander Antonio Alfonseca agreed to a one-year contract with the Phillies, Assistant General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. announced today.

Alfonseca, 34, was limited to just 19 games last season for Texas due to a sore right elbow. He began the season with a 1.69 ERA through his first 11 appearances for the Rangers, but finished with a 5.63 ERA before being designated for assignment on June 9. Following the season, Alfonseca pitched Winter Ball for Azucareros in the Dominican Winter League.

In addition to leading the National League with 45 saves in 2000, Alfonseca won both the Rolaids Relief Man and The Sporting News Fireman of the Year awards while with Florida. He ranks second on the Marlins' all-time appearance list with 307 games and pitched 6.1 scoreless innings for the team in the 1997 World Series en route to winning the championship. Alfonseca has also pitched in the playoffs for the Cubs and Braves, compiling a 1.35 ERA in eight career postseason games.

Originally signed by Montreal as an amateur free agent in 1989, Alfonseca has spent 10 seasons in the major leagues with the Marlins (1997-2001, 2005), Cubs (2002-03), Braves (2004) and Rangers (2006). For his career, he is 30-35 with 121 saves and a 3.99 ERA in 531 games.

Alfonseca brings the Phillies to 39 players on their 40-man roster. He will wear uniform #57.
