The Chicago Cubs today recalled right-handed pitcher Jae Kuk Ryu from Triple-A Iowa. In a corresponding roster move, Chicago placed left-handed pitcher Ryan O'Malley on the 15-day disabled list with a medial left elbow strain.

Ryu, 23, has spent the majority of the season with Iowa, where he has a 7-7 record with a 3.50 ERA (48 ER/123.1 IP) in 22 games (21 starts). Ryu is 5-1 with a 2.89 ERA (14 ER/43.2 IP) over his last eight starts since June 30, including a 3-1 mark with a 2.39 ERA (7 ER/26.1 IP) in four August starts.

The South Korea native made his Major League debut with Chicago on May 14 vs. San Diego pitching 1.0 inning of relief. Ryu made his first career start May 28 vs. the Atlanta Braves, but lasted just 1.1 innings in Chicago's 13-12 loss.

O'Malley, 26, injured his elbow in last night's start against the Philadelphia Phillies at Wrigley Field. The Springfield, Ill., native won his Major League debut on August 16 at Houston, tossing 8.0 shutout innings in a 1-0 victory. O'Malley posted a 7-7 mark with a 4.08 ERA (56 ER/123.2 IP) in 26 games (19 starts) for Iowa this season.
