The Chicago Cubs today selected right-handed pitcher Juan Mateo from Double-A West Tenn. The opening on the 40-man roster was created when infielder Todd Walker was traded to the San Diego Padres yesterday.
Mateo, 23, has gone 7-4 with a 2.82 ERA (29 ER/92.2 IP) in 18 games (17 starts) with the Diamond Jaxx this season. He has limited opponents to a .229 batting average while striking out 70 and walking 26 in 92.2 innings of work. The 6-2, 180-pounder has gone 3-0 with a 3.03 ERA (10 ER/29.2 IP) over his last five starts.
Mateo was originally signed by the Cubs on July 3, 2001, and has compiled a 28-11 record with a 3.25 ERA (123 ER/340.2 IP) in 132 games (38 starts) in five professional seasons. He has struck out 310 batters in 340.2 innings of work.
