The Chicago Cubs today activated right-handed pitcher Kerry Wood from the 15-day disabled list. In a corresponding roster move, right-handed pitcher Jae Kuk Ryu was optioned to Iowa (AAA).

Wood, who will start this afternoon's game against the Washington Nationals, began the season on the disabled list recovering from arthroscopic surgery performed on his right shoulder August 31, 2005. The 28-year-old made two minor league rehab appearances, logging a 0.90 ERA (1 ER/10.0 IP) with 15 strikeouts in starts with Peoria (A) and Iowa.

Wood, who ranks fourth in franchise history with 1,286 career strikeouts, last appeared in a Major League game August 29, 2005, tossing a scoreless inning of relief against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Ryu, who was recalled from Iowa on May 13, made his Major League debut May 14 vs. San Diego, striking out 2 in 1.0 inning of work. Prior to his promotion, the 22-year-old had made seven starts for Iowa, going 1-3 with a 3.21 ERA (15 ER/42.0 IP) and 34 strikeouts.
