The Chicago Cubs today recalled right-handed pitcher Jae Kuk Ryu from Iowa (AAA) and optioned right-handed pitcher Angel Guzman to the Triple-A affiliate.
Ryu looks to make his Major League debut after making seven starts for Iowa, going 1-3 with a 3.21 ERA (15 ER/42.0 IP) and 34 strikeouts. The 22-year-old has pitched 6.0 or more innings in four of his seven starts and given up three or fewer earned runs six times. In addition, Ryu has held batters to a .222 average, including a .213 mark against left-handers.
The South Korea native finished the 2005 season ranked among Southern League leaders with 169.2 innings pitched (first), 133 strikeouts (fourth) and a 3.34 ERA (seventh). He was added to the Cubs' Major League roster in November 2005. Ryu will wear number 20.
Guzman, 24, is 0-2 with a 7.00 ERA (14 ER/18.0 IP) in four starts for the Cubs this season. The right-hander returns to Iowa after being called up on April 23.
