The Chicago Cubs today announced they have agreed to terms with Neifi Perez on a one-year contract for the 2005 season. Neifi signed with the Cubs organization on Aug. 19, after being released by the San Francisco Giants.

Perez, 31, batted .371 in 23 games for the Cubs last season, and ended the campaign by hitting safely in 14 of his last 18 games, going 23-for-62 (.371) with 2 homers and 6 RBIs.

He jumpstarted his Cubs career by becoming the first player since the advent of divisional play to open his Cubs career by collecting hits in his first six at-bats.

Neifi saw action in 19 games (12 starts) at shortstop for the Cubs in 2004 and 2 games at second base (1 start).

In addition to the Cubs, Perez has seen major league action with Colorado (1996-2001), Kansas City (2001-2002) and San Francisco (2003-2004).
