The Chicago Cubs today announced the hiring of Grady Little as a scouting consultant and assistant to Vice President/General Manager Jim Hendry. Little duties will include: professional scouting (both during Spring Training and the regular season), consulting with the general manager in evaluating potential trades and spending extensive time evaluating the Cubs' minor league system. During Spring Training, Little will be in uniform assisting with coaching duties at big league camp.
William Grady Little, 54, has spent the previous 8 seasons coaching and managing at the Major League level. He has spent the past 30 years in baseball as a player, coach or manager in the American League.
He began his big league career in 1996, serving as San Diego's bullpen coach. Little then was hired by the Boston Red Sox as a bench coach (1997-1999), and worked in the same capacity for Cleveland (2000-2001). He returned to the Red Sox as manager in the 2002 season -- and compiled a 188-136 record in two seasons. This past season, he led his team to the ALCS after the Red Sox won the American League wild card.
Prior to that, he worked as a coach and manager in the minor leagues -- beginning his career as a player/coach in the New York Yankees system. He compiled a 1054-903 record as a minor league manager -- and was a four-time manager of the year honoree -- as eight of his teams were in postseason play.
Little began his baseball career when he was drafted by Atlanta in 1968. The former catcher batted .207 in 167 games spanning six minor league seasons.
