PEORIA, Ariz. -- Jason Bartlett had two hits and drove in three runs, and the Padres rallied in the eighth inning Thursday for a 12-11 victory over the Cubs in a Cactus League game at the Peoria Sports Complex.
Bartlett hit a two-run home run, his first of the spring, off Cubs pitcher Chris Volstad in the second inning.
"That was an old-fashioned Cactus League game, 34 hits, 23 runs, some homers, the wind blowing out. ... It could have been a game at Wrigley Field," said Padres manager Bud Black.
Darwin Barney had four hits and Jeff Baker and Reed Johnson hit consecutive home runs in the fifth inning for the Cubs.
Barney had three singles and then added an RBI double as part of a four-run fifth inning. Barney is now hitting .450 this spring. Joe Mather added two hits as did Geovany Soto, Johnson and Baker, who was told Thursday that he's made the Opening Day roster.
Volstad allowed six earned runs on nine hits in 4 2/3 innings. He did help himself with a two-run single through a drawn-in infield in the second inning. Volstad was named the No. 4 starter in the Cubs starting rotation on Thursday.
San Diego pitcher Clayton Richard struggled, allowing eight runs on 12 hits over 4 1/3 innings. Richard is projected as the Padres No. 4 starter in the rotation.
"It was just pitches being elevated in the strike zone," Richard said. "Big league hitters enjoy hitting those."
Nick Hundley had two hits and drove in two runs for the Padres. Teammate Jesus Guzman, coming off the bench, hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning.
Trailing 11-9 in the eighth, the Padres scored on an RBI groundout from Brad Davis and a two-run double from Matt Clark to take the lead. Padres right-hander Brad Brach pitched a scoreless ninth for the save.
Cubs up next: Ryan Dempster will face the Dodgers at 3:05 p.m. CT on Friday at HoHoKam Park, making his final tuneup before Opening Day. In four Cactus League starts, the right-hander has given up six runs on 16 hits over 14 2/3 innings. The audio from the game will be broadcast for free on cubs.com.
