Cubs donate $20K to DR community

Cubs players Aramis Ramirez and Carlos Marmol joined Hall of Famers Ernie Banks and Billy Williams in ceremonies Tuesday to announce a $20,000 contribution to community projects in the Dominican Republic.The announcement was made at the Cubs' Dominican Academy in Boca Chica.
Chicago Cubs Charities presented the contribution, done through the Major League Baseball Dominican Development Alliance (MLB-DDA) and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). The USAID will match the Cubs' contribution, and the money will support expansion of a surgical recovery room in Santiago, Dominican Republic, as well as additional educational initiatives.
Cubs pitcher Sean Marshall attended the ceremony.
"Chicago Cubs Charities is proud to support the Major League Baseball Dominican Development Alliance to help in its work to improve the lives of children and families in the Dominican Republic," said Mike Lufrano, senior vice president of community affairs for the Cubs.
Funds were raised at the Second Annual Rooters Ball, held Sept. 2 at Harry Caray's Italian Steakhouse. Cubs catcher Geovany Soto hosted the event and was joined by Banks, the West Side Rooters' chairman, and several Cubs players, including Ramirez, Marmol, Alfonso Soriano, Derrek Lee, and Randy Wells.
