Lee named Player of Month for September

Cubs first baseman led Majors in batting average

10/06/09 2:16 PM EST

Cubs first baseman Derrek Lee was named winner of the Player of the Month Award for September.

It was a stellar final month of the season for Lee, who led the Majors with a .386 average (32-for-83) with nine home runs, 23 RBIs, a .795 slugging percentage and .500 on-base percentage.

Lee hit 11 homers in his final 30 games of the season.

It was great start to the month when Lee and his family welcomed the birth of their second child, Dylan, on Sept. 3. He missed two games and returned with a 3-for-4, two-homer performance in a win over the Mets. On Sept. 7 at Pittsburgh, he had his second two-homer game of the month.

Overall this season, Lee batted .306 with 35 home runs and a career-high 111 RBIs. It was the 20th time in franchise history that he hit 30 homers and drive in 100 runs during a season. He last achieved the feat in 2005.

Lee previously won the NL Player of the Month Award in April 2005.
