Former Cubs reliever Hollins found dead

Fortieth-round pick in '88 Draft likely drowned while fishing

07/10/09 7:23 PM ET

Former Cubs reliever Jessie Hollins was found dead after apparently drowning while fishing below Lake Livingston Dam in Texas on Thursday afternoon, according to The Associated Press, which cited the Texas Department of Parks & Wildlife.

Lake Livingston is about 80 miles north of Houston.

Searchers found the body of Hollins, 39, close to the area where he was reported to have entered the Trinity River at about 4 p.m. CT on Friday, Texas Game Warden Capt. Shawn Phillips told The AP.

Hollins, a native of Conroe, Texas, was fishing on the Polk County bank of the river when he disappeared, The AP said.

Selected by the Cubs in the 40th round of the 1988 First-Year Player Draft, Hollins made four relief appearances for Chicago in 1992. Drafted out of San Jacinto Junior College, the right-hander pitched the better part of six years in the Minor Leagues, going 22-16 with a 4.35 ERA.
