Oft-injured Fox goes down again

Cubs reliever leaves Saturday's game after brief relief outing

05/10/09 12:02 AM ET

MILWAUKEE -- Cubs reliever Chad Fox incurred the latest in a long line of injuries on Saturday, leaving the game in the eighth inning against the Brewers with a right elbow injury.

Manager Lou Piniella indicated after the game that the team would recall a reliever to take Fox's place on the roster. There was no immediate timetable for his return, and Fox was unavailable for comment after the game.

Fox walked Ryan Braun leading off the inning, then unleashed a 2-0 pitch to the backstop while facing Prince Fielder. Fox immediately appeared to experience discomfort in his throwing arm and was led off the field by the Chicago training staff.

Fox's big league career has been an arduous one. He returned to the mound in 2008 after a two-year absence from the game while recovering from right elbow surgery, and he missed significant portions of the 2004 and 2005 seasons with elbow injuries. Fox was recalled to the Cubs on Wednesday and made just one other appearance, allowing three runs in one-third of an inning.

Fox has undergone two Tommy John surgeries in his career.
