CHICAGO -- The Cubs announced two promotions on Tuesday, naming Paul Weaver director of international scouting and Jose Serra as the Latin American coordinator.
Weaver had been a special assistant to the general manager. He joined the Cubs in October 2006. The 2009 season will be the 14th in the Cubs organization for Serra, who was the manager of Latin American operations.
"Paul and Jose have both been integral contributors to our international scouting efforts and are highly respected within our organization and the industry," said Oneri Fleita, vice president of player personnel. "In just two years with the organization, Paul has been especially valuable in enhancing our presence in the Far East, while Jose has been essential to our scouting and development efforts in Latin America for more than a decade."
Weaver was a member of the Astros for 25 seasons, then worked as a Major League scout with the Diamondbacks before joining the Cubs.
Serra began his professional career as an infielder in the Orioles farm system. He joined the Cubs after his playing career ended in 1995.
