CHICAGO -- This could be the start of something big.

Both sides of the "Road to Wrigley" game believe in the concept of pitting Minor League teams against each other in Major League ballparks. In other words, this might not be a one-time deal.

"I think the intent from the organization is to have a different level come in here [to Wrigley Field] each year," Peoria Chiefs manager Ryne Sandberg said after Tuesday night's suspended game with the Kane County Cougars. "I think it's good for all the guys. I think it's good for the organization. I think it's good for the players. I think, for instance, if Double-A came in here next year and played, that would be terrific."

The popularity for the first Minor League matchup in the history of Wrigley is hard to ignore. The crowd of 32,103 shattered the Midwest League attendance record.

"I hope this is something that goes well because anything like this is good for the organization and ultimately good for our players," Cubs player development director Oneri Fleita said. "When you're trying to develop players to play here, you want them to see first-hand where it is they are trying to get."

It's too early to tell if the Cubs will follow the lead of the Red Sox and schedule more Minor League games in Chicago. Boston will host its third annual "Futures at Fenway" Minor League doubleheader at Fenway Park on Aug. 9.

"I think that would be a great situation if Major League organizations can actually do that for their Minor League clubs," Kane County manager Aaron Nieckula said. "Is it feasibly possible? I don't know."
