OAKLAND -- A's general manager Billy Beane all but apologized to Jemile Weeks for stealing his thunder, but the kid didn't seem to mind a bit.
Weeks, the 12th overall pick in last month's First-Year Player Draft, agreed to terms on a contract with Oakland on Tuesday, and the team gave him a uniform and let him work out with the big league club.
The 21-year-old second baseman out of University of Miami went largely unnoticed by swarms of media on hand though, because Beane had just traded Rich Harden and Chad Gaudin to the Cubs.
"That's OK," said Weeks, the younger brother of Brewers second baseman Rickie Weeks. "I guess [the trade] was kind of unexpected, but I can't complain. Being on a Major League field with all these guys, that's enough for me."
The A's also announced the signing of sixth-round selection Tyreace House.
Weeks, who got a reported $1.9 million signing bonus, earned first team All-ACC honors this year after batting .363 with 13 home runs and 62 RBIs in 63 games. He also had 17 doubles and five triples for a .641 slugging percentage and was successful in 22 of 23 stolen base attempts. He said he'd been told he'll report immediately to Class A Kane County.
"In and out," he said of his visit to Oakland. "They're gonna ship me out tomorrow."
Weeks also said he'd gotten a chance the chat with A's second baseman Mark Ellis, whom he might one day replace.
"I don't look at it like that, and I don't think he does, either," Weeks said. "We just talked about college and turning pro, things like that. Everybody's been great. I'm here to have some fun, and hopefully I'll get back as quick as I can."
House was the A's final pick on the first day of the Draft, out of College of the Canyons in Southern California. The junior college outfielder batted .348 and stole 31 bases in 43 games for the Cougars.
The A's have now signed or agreed to terms with 23 of their Draft picks, including nine of the top 10.
