CHICAGO -- X-rays were negative on the right wrist of Cubs third baseman Aramis Ramirez, who has tendinitis, and his status is listed as day to day.

Ramirez saw a hand specialist on Friday because his right wrist was swollen from an injury he suffered in Spring Training. He underwent an arthrogram at Northwestern Hospital.

The wrist hadn't been bothering Ramirez too much. He was hitting .406 in eight games with a hit in every game this year.

"I think he jammed it a little bit in Spring Training, and obviously, he's been swinging the bat great and playing through it," Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said. "I think he woke up this morning and had some swelling."

The Cubs did not play on Wednesday because of snow, and had Thursday off. Ramirez had been getting treatment on his wrist since he first injured it in March when he slid into second base.

"It's been bothering him here lately," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. "With Ramirez, he may be out for a few days. We're not going to take any chances."

Ryan Theriot, who played some third this spring, started there on Friday against the Cincinnati Reds. Mark DeRosa, who would've been Ramirez's backup, is also sidelined due a back injury, leaving the Cubs a little short-handed.

"He's better today and he can be used in an emergency," Piniella said of DeRosa. "We'll give him one more day."

DeRosa did come into Friday's game as a defensive replacement in the sixth.

Arms race: Mark Prior, who had to shorten an outing in Arizona on Thursday because of discomfort in his right shoulder, was to be examined on Friday by orthopedic specialist Dr. Lewis Yocum in Los Angeles.

Prior had been scheduled to throw three innings in an extended spring game in Mesa, Ariz., but ended it early after two innings.

"It's disappointing," Piniella said. "We're hoping to get him on track. Hopefully, it's not serious."

Prior was optioned to Triple-A Iowa at the end of Spring Training, and placed on the Minor League team's disabled list with right shoulder fatigue.

As for Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood, he was examined on Thursday by Dr. Dave Altchek, the New York Mets' orthopedic specialist who had advised the right-hander last season. Wood was shut down after appearing in five innings over five games this spring, and had been rehabbing in Mesa.

"[Altchek] doesn't feel he needs a procedure," Hendry said. "He thought he had a good dose of tendinitis and probably tried to overextend himself to make the ballclub [in Spring Training]. [Altchek] sent him back to Arizona to get back on path and hopefully start getting ready to throw."

Friday the 13th: There are no rabbit's feet hanging from Cubs relief pitcher Will Ohman's locker. He wears No. 13 and isn't superstitious at all. Why pick that?

"The number I originally wanted was gone," Ohman said. "I had the least amount of time at Double-A and I had some choices. But I said, 'One of my favorite players in the big leagues is Billy Wagner,' so I decided to wear No. 13. I had a great season, so I said, 'You know, I really like that number.'"

The Cubs are 43-44 all-time on Friday the 13th. The most recent Friday the 13th game was a 6-3 win over the Nationals on May 13, 2005.

Extra bases: Four Cubs players -- Derrek Lee, Jacque Jones, Daryle Ward and Cliff Floyd -- plus coaches Gerald Perry and Lester Strode will wear No. 42 on Sunday in honor of Jackie Robinson Day. ... Cubs Care will present more than $1 million in grants to charitable organizations and institutions serving Chicago and its residents on Monday. Hall of Famer Ernie Banks was scheduled to present checks to the organizations. ... Actor Joe Mantegna was to sing the seventh-inning stretch on Friday. Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn is scheduled for Sunday with the Wheaton Warrenville South football champs on Monday, followed by David Arquette on Tuesday.

Minor matters: The Iowa Cubs game on Thursday was postponed in the sixth inning because of concerns over the Albuquerque team's travel plans. There was no word on when the game would be resumed. Ryan O'Malley gave up two runs on nine hits over four innings in the game. Felix Pie also scored two runs and leads the league in runs scored. ... Double-A Tennessee dropped both games of a doubleheader on Thursday in its home opener. Sean Gallagher gave up four runs on four hits over five innings in the first game, a 5-2 loss to Huntsville. In the second game, Donnie Veal gave up three runs on two hits and seven walks over four innings. ... Jeff Samardzija did not get a decision in his second start for Class A Daytona. Samardzija gave up two runs on five hits and two walks over five innings while striking out two. Tyler Colvin was a triple short of the cycle. ... The Peoria Chiefs lost both ends of a doubleheader on Thursday to Quad Cities. Yusuf Carter had two of the Chiefs' four hits in the second game, a 2-1 loss.

On deck: Rich Hill is scheduled to start Game 2 of this three-game series against the Reds, facing Bronson Arroyo on Saturday at 12:05 p.m. CT. This will be Hill's second start. He was supposed to go Wednesday against Houston but that game was rained out.
