Cubs, Cotts avoid arbitration

CHICAGO -- The Chicago Cubs took care of one of their arbitration-eligible players on Wednesday when they settled on a one-year, $825,000 contract with left-handed pitcher Neal Cotts.

Pitchers Carlos Zambrano, Mark Prior and Will Ohman are the remaining arbitration-eligible players on the Cubs roster.

Cotts' deal does have an interesting incentive bonus. He could earn an additional $150,000 if he is named World Series MVP.

Cotts, 26, was acquired Nov. 16 from the Chicago White Sox for pitcher David Aardsma and Minor League left-hander Carlos Vasquez.

Cotts made $400,000 last year as a reliever for the White Sox. He was 4-0 with a 1.94 ERA in 69 games during the team's 2005 championship season, but went 1-2 with a 5.17 ERA in 70 games last season.
