PHOENIX -- Aramis Ramirez's two-run homer in the fourth inning lifted the visiting Cubs to a 2-1 victory over the A's on Thursday in the Cactus League opener for both teams at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

The A's opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning on a two-out RBI double by catcher Jason Kendall off Cubs righty Sergio Mitre.

The Cubs answered to take the lead in the top of the fourth when, after Nomar Garciaparra was hit in the left wrist by a pitch and lifted for a pinch-runner, Ramirez homered to left off A's rookie Joe Blanton.

Carlos Zambrano started for the Cubs and pitched two hitless innings. Dan Haren allowed two hits over two shutout innings as the A's starter.
