CHICAGO -- The Cubs placed second baseman Mark Grudzielanek on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday because of a partial tear in his right Achilles.
Jose Macias, a versatile player who can handle both infield and outfield positions, was activated from the disabled list to take Grudzielanek's spot on the roster. Macias had undergone arthroscopic surgery March 26 to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee.
Grudzielanek underwent an MRI test on his ankle Tuesday, which revealed the partial tear. His DL stint is retroactive to April 10.
The injury flared up in Spring Training.
"We thought we had it under control but it flared up again," he said Monday.
Todd Walker will likely take over as the starting second baseman for the Cubs. Walker, who signed Dec. 23 to be primarily a reserve player, batted .283 last year with the Red Sox and made 134 starts at second base. So far, he is 3-for-15 in six games with the Cubs.
Grudzielanek joins pitchers Mark Prior (right Achilles) and Mike Remlinger (shoulder) on the Cubs' disabled list. Center fielder Corey Patterson's status is day to day with a mild groin strain.
Grudzielanek, 33, batted .314 last year with the Cubs despite being on the DL for one month because of a broken bone in his right hand. Carrie Muskat is a reporter for MLB.com. This story was not subject to the approval of Major League Baseball or its clubs.
