CHICAGO -- Juan Cruz tuned up for the 2004 season with a solid stint in the Dominican Winter League.

The right-handed pitcher went 3-0 with a 1.04 ERA in five games (two starts) for the Licey Tigres, giving up three earned runs in 26 innings. Cruz, 25, struck out 10 in one game and finished with 33 K's.

The Cubs have an opening for a fifth starter to join right-handers Kerry Wood, Mark Prior, Matt Clement and Carlos Zambrano.

Cruz wasn't the only Cub to shine for the Tigres. Outfielder Felix Pie batted .302 in 29 games (19-for-63) with two doubles and a triple. Pie, who turns 19 in February, hit .285 for Class A Lansing and was named to the Midwest League's post-season All-Star team.

Pitcher Wilton Chavez went 2-3 with a 3.38 ERA in 15 games (three starts), giving up 13 earned runs over 34 2/3 innings. Chavez, 25, who pitched for Double-A West Tenn and Triple-A Iowa, struck out 23.

The left-hander, who led the Iowa Cubs in victories, going 11-7, was dealt Dec. 19 to Montreal for Jose Macias.
