Cubs pitcher Matt Clement named National League Pepsi Player of the Week
Matt Clement of the Chicago Cubs, who was 2-0 with a shutout and a 0.53 ERA, was named the National League Pepsi Player of the Week for the week of July 28 to Aug. 3.
Clement pitched 17.0 innings in his two starts, allowed five hits, walked four and struck out 15 batters. On July 29, he threw his second career two-hitter and third career shutout in a 3-0 win over the San Francisco Giants. Five days later he allowed only one run in a 2-1 victory over the Diamondbacks.
Other players nominated were Atlanta's Marcus Giles (league-leading .448 average, 7 RBI) and John Smoltz (5 SV, 0.00 ERA); Colorado's Jay Payton (.423, 2 HR, 8 RBI); San Francisco's Edgardo Alfonzo (.391, 2 HR, 8 RBI); Philadelphia's Kevin Millwood (1-0, three-hit shutout); and Pittsburgh's Reggie Sanders (.276, 4 HR, 10 RBI), Abraham Nuñez (.417, 6 RBI) and Jeff Suppan (1-0, 0.00 ERA).
Clement will receive a Tourneau luxury Swiss timepiece as the National League Pepsi Player of the Week.
