Cubs wrap up 2002 draft
Chicago picks up local talent with second-day picks
By Carrie Muskat / MLB.com

Cubs' round-by-round picks

The Chicago Cubs selected some in-state talent Wednesday during the second day of the June player draft.

The Cubs chose four Illinois prep players. Right-handed pitcher Collin Walker of Minooka High School was the 1,203rd player taken, shortstop Geoff Orr of Carl Sandburg High School was No. 1,263, left-handed pitcher Chris Ericksen of Joliet Catholic Academy No. 1,347, and right-handed pitcher Gary Kerschke of Bartlett High School No. 1,451.

Ericksen went 7-2 with a 1.40 ERA over 54 2/3 innings for the Hilltoppers, who were 21-9 this season.

During the second day, the Cubs selected 12 pitchers, five infielders, seven catchers and one outfielder. Fifteen of the 25 picks were high school players.

One of the interesting picks was catcher Anthony McLin of McLauren High School. He was described by Baseball America as having a body similar to former Major Leaguer Kevin Mitchell at 6-foot, 200 pounds.

Jim Hendry, the team's vice president of player personnel, said he was pleased with the draft, especially No. 1 pick Bobby Brownlie who was very enthused to be a Cub.

"He's a very competitive guy and an outstanding kid," Hendry said of Brownlie, a junior right-handed pitcher who starred at Rutgers.

Brownlie was bothered this season with tendinitis in his right shoulder. "A little time off would not hurt him," Hendry said.

The Cubs decision to draft college pitchers -- their first four picks were just that -- should pay off.

"Good college pitching normally goes high," Hendry said.

The Cubs executive was also happy to see first baseman Brian Dopirak available. The team selected him in the second round and the 6-foot-4, 225 pound right-handed hitter apparently has a lot of power.

Dopirak played at the same school as Hendry, Dunedin (Fla.) High School.
