Friars face 2-0 series hole
Seeking a win to even the NLDS at one game apiece, the Padres squandered a number of chances and head home down 2-0 in the best-of-five series. Pedro Astacio allowed two earned runs in four innnings and Xavier Nady collected an RBI single for the Friars, who grounded into four double plays to cut a few rallies short.

Mulder, bats efficient in win
Mark Mulder allowed just one run over 6 2/3 innings to give St. Louis a 2-0 NLDS lead. The Redbirds opened up a four-run lead without the benefit of a hit as the Cardinals put themselves in position to earn a sweep on Saturday.
