Cubs to Pay Tribute to Ron Santo, Thank Mesa Voters for Support of Proposition 420 During Special Spring Training Events02/18/2011 10:04 AM ET
MESA, AZ - The Chicago Cubs will pay tribute to Ron Santo on March 10 and host an additional pair of special days at spring training games to thank Mesa voters for their support last fall of Proposition 420 to keep the Cubs in Mesa.
Ron Santo Day will feature a pre-game ceremony at third base before the Cubs host the Cleveland Indians on March 10. Santo passed away December 3, 2010 and this spring training ceremony is one of many tributes to Santo during the 2011 campaign. Additional details of the March 10 Ron Santo Day are forthcoming.
In addition to Ron Santo Day, Mesa Little Leaguers, campaign supporters and volunteers will receive special pre-game recognition at a pair of games this spring as thanks for their help passing the measure to authorize financing for a new Cubs spring training facility in the city.
The Cubs have designated the team's opening game on February 27 against Oakland as Mesa Little League Day. The team will host 400 Little Leaguers and their parents, and include young ballplayers in on-field activities prior to the game.
"We could not have won this election without the support of Little League families," said Cubs Chairman Tom Ricketts.
The team also will recognize supporters and volunteers at Thank You Mesa Day on March 7 when the Cubs face the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. About 250 people who helped on the Proposition 420 campaign will meet with Ricketts family before the game and be honored in an on-field ceremony. Members of the Mesa City Council will simultaneously toss the game's ceremonial first pitch.
"Thanks to the voters, we have a lot to celebrate during this spring training season," Ricketts said.
