Cubs Ticket Operations Director Frank Maloney to retire at end of year10/12/2010 2:34 PM ET
Longtime Chicago Cubs ticket operations director Frank Maloney has announced he will retire at the end of the 2010 calendar year. Maloney will remain with the club as a consultant next season.
In 29 seasons in the Cubs ticket office, including the last 27 as its director, Maloney oversaw nine single-season attendance records, including Wrigley Field's first two-million fan season in 1984 and its first three-million fan season in 2004. Maloney steps down from his post having helped the Cubs to seven-consecutive seasons with three million fans at Wrigley Field starting 2004, one of only five organizations to reach that mark in each of the last seven years.
Prior to joining the Cubs, Maloney had a distinguished career in college football, serving as an assistant coach at his alma mater, the University of Michigan, from 1968-73 and as the head football coach at Syracuse University from 1974-80. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1962 and served as head football coach at Mt. Carmel High School from 1963-67.
"After nearly 30 years with the Cubs and more than a decade in college football, it is simply time for me to lessen my day-to-day grind," said Maloney. "While I won't spend as many weekends and late nights in the box office next year, I am eager to lend my expertise to the organization as we move forward. I am so thankful to my wonderful staff and appreciate all of their efforts throughout the years.
"Frank is a Wrigley Field institution and led the Cubs to a number of milestones as the leader of our box office," said Cubs President Crane Kenney. "We congratulate him on nearly 30 tremendous years of service to our organization and look forward to tapping into his expertise in the future."
Colin Faulkner will join the Cubs as vice president, ticket sales and service on November 1.
"I've been working with the Cubs on my transition for some time now and couldn't be happier to welcome Colin to the Cubs organization," said Maloney. "I was very impressed with Colin during the interview process and know he is the right person for the job. I look forward to helping Colin with his transition to the Cubs as we head into next season."
Faulkner has spent the last 10 years with the NHL's Dallas Stars, where he most recently served as their senior vice president of marketing. He joined Southwest Sports Group in 2000 as an account executive for the Texas Rangers and Dallas Stars and began working exclusively with the Stars two years later, holding positions such as director of sales and vice president of sales and service along the way. Faulkner oversaw marketing and sales strategy with the franchise and helped the club to a record 238-game sellout streak during his tenure.
Prior to joining Southwest Sports Group, Faulkner was a corporate account executive with the MLS' Dallas Burn from 1998-2000. He graduated with a degree in marketing from Baylor University in 1998. Faulkner, his wife Jaime, and their three children will relocate to the Chicago area.
