Cubs reduce spring roster to 37 players 03/24/2009 3:01 PM ETMLB.com
The Chicago Cubs today sent five players to minor league camp, reducing their spring roster from 42 to 37 players. Additionally, the club outrighted outfielder Richie Robnett to Triple-A Iowa. Chicago's 40-man roster now stands at 38 players. Right-handed pitcher Jose Ascanio and outfielders Jake Fox and Sam Fuld were optioned to Triple-A Iowa. Two non-roster invitees have been assigned to minor league camp: left-handed pitcher Jason Waddell and infielder Bobby Scales. Chicago's spring roster of 37 players consists of 18 pitchers (two non-roster invitees), four catchers (one non-roster invitee), eight infielders (two non-roster invitees) and seven outfielders (one non-roster invitee).
