Fans can pledge support for LCA cure
04/30/2007 7:52 PM ET
Cubs teammates Michael Barrett and Ryan Dempster are contributing to Derrek Lee's Project 3000. Now, fans can, too.

Lee's 1st Touch Foundation and Chicago Cubs Charities have created a "Play for LCA" program, part of their fight to raise awareness and find a cure for Lebers Congenital Amaurosis, a genetic disorder that resulted in partial blindness of the first baseman's daughter, Jada.

Through "Play for LCA," fans can donate to Project 3000 based on the number of home runs Barrett hits and the number of saves Dempster records in 2007.

The first 100 fans to sign up for "Play for LCA" at Wrigley Field on Saturday will receive a free gift and the first 100 fans to pledge $500 or more will receive a free "Play for LCA" jacket. Fans may donate a set amount or can choose to donate to the charity based on player performance.

Before the season began, both Barrett and Dempster pledged funds to Project 3000 based on the same statistics fans now can pledge.

Prior to Saturday's game against the Washington Nationals, Cubs Charities and Project 3000 will participate in a pregame ceremony welcoming a family affected by LCA and leading LCA researcher Dr. Edwin Stone of the University of Iowa's Carver Laboratory. There will be two Project 3000 tables at the ballpark throughout the day where fans can obtain information, buy support bands and sign up to "Play for LCA."

Cubs broadcasters Len Kasper and Bob Brenly joined Chicago Cubs Charities as hosts of the Len & Bob Bash at the House of Blues, which resulted in an $18,000 contribution to Project 3000.
