SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The 1st Touch Foundation is proud to announce that Michael Barrett of the Chicago Cubs has joined teammate Derrek Lee in his efforts to find a cure for Lebers Congenital Amaurosis. Together, Lee and Barrett have created a new fundraising campaign, Swinging for Sight.

Barrett has committed to donating $10,000 for every home run he hits in the 2007 regular season to Lee's PROJECT 3000. Barrett is kicking off his fundraising efforts with an initial $50,000 donation to PROJECT 3000. The 2005 National League Silver Slugger at his position, Barrett has hit 16 home runs in each of the past two seasons and is one of only two players at his position (Mike Piazza) to hit over 10 home runs in each of the past five years.

I can't tell you how happy I am to have a teammate and a friend like Michael Barrett," Derrek Lee said. "Everyone at the 1st Touch Foundation is thrilled, and this season will go a long way towards helping fight this disease."

Project 3000 was created by Derrek Lee and Boston Celtics CEO and co-owner Wyc Grousbeck's in the fall of 2006 to forward their mission of eradicating LCA, a disease that has touched both of their families. A central part of their plan is to find every man, woman and child affected with LCA in the United States - about 3,000 people.
