Minor League contest at Wrigley Field draws more than 32,000 fans
The Chicago Cubs and Peoria Chiefs announced that the July 29th "Road to Wrigley" Single-A contest between Peoria and Kane County drew a Midwest League record 32,103 fans to Wrigley Field. The 32,103 fans more than doubled the previous mark of 14,492 fans set August 11, 2007 by the Kane County Cougars at Elfstrom Stadium in Geneva, Ill.
Among the 16 games held at major league stadiums on July 29th, the "Road to Wrigley" attendance of 32,103 ranked eighth, outpacing major league contests at eight other parks.
The "Road to Wrigley", presented by National City Bank, marked the return of Cubs Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg to the Wrigley Field dugout as Peoria Chiefs manager and included family-friendly priced tickets, an array of activities for children of all ages and a fun atmosphere filled with traditional minor league attractions within the Friendly Confines.
Fans were also entertained between innings by the mascots of both teams and an assortment of other fun characters who regularly perform at Peoria Chiefs games and several other ballparks.
The contest was suspended due to rain in the bottom of the ninth with a tie score of 6-6, leaving Chiefs runners on first and second with one out and Luis Flores at the plate with a 1-1 count.
With the suspension of the game, the teams were forced to cancel the planned post game activity of having all children, 14 and under, run the bases of Wrigley Field. In an effort to accommodate all of those who wished to take part in this unique opportunity, the Cubs have offered ticket holders of the Peoria contest the opportunity to return to Wrigley and run the bases.
On Sunday, August 17th, the Cubs will host a high school baseball game presented by Under Armor. The game is scheduled to start at 1:05 p.m. Any person holding a ticket from the July 29th Peoria Chief vs Kane County game will be allowed into Wrigley Field for free to watch 2008 Under Armour All-America Baseball game. Once the game concludes, all children 14 and under in attendance will be allowed to run the bases.
