Players in the Community

The Chicago Cubs support the community through a wide range of activities and financial contributions. Players and coaches provide support to Chicagoland nonprofit organizations by signing memorabilia for silent auctions and raffles, participating in the annual Cubs Convention and Caravan, visiting hospitals and schools throughout the area and making monetary contributions. Along with their support of Cubs Care and Chicago Cubs Charities, many players have established their own foundations and provide support to organizations in their hometowns. Listed below are just some of the charitable activities supported by Chicago Cubs players.
Jeff Baker

Jeff works closely with Colangelo Charities. Founded by former Major League player Mike Colangelo and his wife Robin, the organization is based in Jeff's native Virginia and provides support to nonprofit organizations in the community along with cancer charities.

During the 2009 season, Jeff visited patients at Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago.

Ryan Dempster

Ryan Dempster
Since 2006, Ryan has donated tickets and concession vouchers to nonprofit groups working with underprivileged children in the Chicagoland area through his Dempster's Dugout Ticket Program. He hosts hundreds of children each season and meets with them during batting practice to talk baseball and sign autographs.

In 2006 and 2008, Ryan was the Chicago Cubs recipient of the Roberto Clemente Award, given to a Major League Baseball player on each team who excels on the field and is also committed to community work.

Ryan participated in the Taylor Hooton Foundation's Hoot's Chalk Talk program and the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers PLAY program, meeting with kids at Wrigley Field to discuss the dangers of drug use.

In 2009, Ryan visited the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., to meet with wounded United States military members.

Ryan also sponsors an RBI team through the Union League Boys & Girls Club of Chicago, which provides inner-city youth the opportunity to play organized baseball.

Ryan supported Children's Memorial Hospital in 2009 by participating in their Bedtime Stories program. The crew from Children's Memorial taped him reading a bedtime story which now plays on the hospital's Skylight TV network in the evenings.

Ryan and his wife Jenny are in the process of creating the Ryan and Jenny Dempster Family Foundation, which will focus on providing support to families affected by DiGeorge Syndrome.

Mike also sponsors an RBI team through the Union League Boys & Girls Club of Chicago, which provides inner-city youth the opportunity to play organized baseball.

Sam Fuld

During the 2009 season, Sam visited patients at Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago.

Sam attended the 2009 West Side Rooters Ball to help raise funds for Chicago Cubs Charities, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and the Dominican Development Alliance.

Kosuke Fukudome

Kosuke sponsors an RBI team through the Union League Boys & Girls Club of Chicago, which provides inner-city youth the opportunity to play organized baseball.

John Grabow

After joining the Chicago Cubs in August 2009, John Grabow attended the 2009 West Side Rooters Ball to raise funds for Chicago Cubs Charities, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and the Dominican Development Alliance.

Angel Guzman

Angel attended the grand opening of Little Cubs Field in Humboldt Park in May 2009. The $2 million Little League field was built through a partnership between Chicago Cubs Charities, the Chicago Park District and the Parkways Foundation.

Koyie Hill

On December 5, 2009, Cubs catcher Koyie Hill will host Koyie Hill's Big Wish to benefit The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Kansas. The event will be held in Wichita, Kansas, and will feature a performance by country singer Tracy Byrd, a silent auction of sports memorabilia and the chance to mingle with a number of Major League Baseball players, including fellow Chicago Cubs. Derrek Lee
Derrek Lee

In 2006, Derrek and his wife, Christina, launched the 1st Touch Foundation with the goal of "supporting the educational aspirations of our community's young people." The 1st Touch Foundation is a supporter of The Athlete's Closet, which raises funds to buy clothing and food for the poor through the online auctioning of gently-worn designer clothing.

The Lees also began and fund Project 3000, an initiative designed to identify and offer genetic testing to those diagnosed with Leber's Congenital Amaurosis, with the goal of eventually finding a cure. Thus far the project has assisted more than 1,000 people and raised more than $1 million.

Derrek sponsors an RBI team through the Union League Boys & Girls Club of Chicago, which provides inner-city youth the opportunity to play organized baseball.

Derrek attended the 2009 West Side Rooters Ball to help raise funds for Chicago Cubs Charities, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and the Dominican Development Alliance.

In 2006, 2007 and 2009, Derrek was the recipient of the Major League Baseball Player Association's Heart and Hustle Award.

In 2007, Derrek was the Chicago Cubs recipient of the Roberto Clemente Award, given to a Major League Baseball player on each team who excels on the field and is also committed to community work.

Ted Lilly
Ted Lilly

During the 2008 and 2009 seasons, Ted Lilly has donated tickets and concession vouchers to non-profit groups working with underprivileged children in the Chicagoland area. He hosts hundreds of children each season and meets with them during batting practice to talk baseball and sign autographs.

In 2009, Ted was the Chicago Cubs recipient of the Roberto Clemente Award, given to a Major League Baseball player on each team who excels on the field and is also committed to community work. Ted donated the grant associated with the award to P.A.W.S. Chicago, a no-kill animal shelter.

Ted sponsors an RBI team through the Union League Boys & Girls Club of Chicago, which provides inner-city youth the opportunity to play organized baseball.

Sean Marshall

Sean Marshall attended the Cubs Care grant luncheon in April 2009 to help present more than $1.1 million to Cubs Care grant recipients.

In August, he visited patients at the Shriner's Hospital in Chicago with fellow pitcher Rich Harden.

In 2009, Sean met with children to help fulfill their wish of meeting Chicago Cubs players in conjunction with The Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Lou Piniella
Lou Piniella

Lou sponsors an RBI team through the Union League Boys & Girls Club of Chicago, which provides inner-city youth the opportunity to play organized baseball.

In 2008, Lou was named National League Manager of the Year by the Baseball Writers Association of America and donated the $100,000 bonus to Cubs Care.

Lou supports numerous charities in the Tampa Bay area by acting as chairman of the Abilities Golf Tournament and spokesman for prostate cancer awareness. He also works closely with Heartbeat International, an organization that provides pacemakers to those who cannot afford them.

In 2009, Lou filmed a public service announcement for the Greater Chicago Food Depository and hosted an event benefitting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Aramis Ramirez

Aramis sponsors an RBI team through the Union League Boys & Girls Club of Chicago, which provides inner-city youth the opportunity to play organized baseball.

In 2009, Aramis met with children to help fulfill their wish of meeting Chicago Cubs players in conjunction with The Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Aramis attended the 2009 West Side Rooters Ball to help raise funds for Chicago Cubs Charities, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and the Dominican Development Alliance.

Aramis also supported Children's Memorial Hospital in 2009 by participating in their Bedtime Stories program. The crew from Children's taped him reading a bedtime story in Spanish which now plays on the hospital's Skylight TV network in the evenings.

Jeff Samardzija

In memory of his mother, Jeff established the Debora Samardzija Memorial Scholarship, awarded annually to a Notre Dame University student who has endured the loss of a loved one.

Alfonso Soriano

Alfonso attended the 2009 West Side Rooters Ball to help raise funds for Chicago Cubs Charities, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and the Dominican Development Alliance.

Alfonso sponsors an RBI team through the Union League Boys & Girls Club of Chicago, which provides inner-city youth the opportunity to play organized baseball.

In 2009, Alfonso attended the Children's Neuroblastoma Cancer Foundation Grand Slam Gala and met with children to help fulfill their wish of meeting Chicago Cubs players in conjunction with The Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Geovany Soto

In 2008 and 2009, Geovany Soto was the chairman of the West Side Rooters Ball. The event was held at Harry Caray's Italian Steakhouse and featured live and silent auctions with proceeds benefitting Chicago Cubs Charities, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and the Dominican Development Alliance. Over two years the ball has raised more than $100,000.

Geovany sponsors an RBI team through the Union League Boys & Girls Club of Chicago, which provides inner-city youth the opportunity to play organized baseball.

In 2009, Geovany met with children to help fulfill their wish of meeting Chicago Cubs players in conjunction with The Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Ryan Theriot

Ryan recently launched the Ryan Theriot Foundation which is based in Louisiana. To raise funds for his foundation and for Chicago Cubs Charities, Ryan auctioned off the opportunity to participate in a baseball clinic taught by him at Wrigley Field.

Ryan joined two partners to start the Hardt of Champions athletic complex in Louisiana. Their goal is to raise money for families and kids who are struggling. Once a year, the facility hosts a free clinic for underprivileged children with instruction from multiple Major League players. In 2007, the complex hosted the Grand Slam for Sam event to raise money to cover the medical expenses of a young boy from Baton Rouge who was injured in a swimming pool accident.

As the Cubs team representative for Kerry Wood's Champions for Children's event to benefit Children's Memorial Hospital, Ryan is in charge of obtaining silent auction items and encouraging teammate attendance. Ryan also supported Children's Memorial Hospital in 2009 by participating in their Bedtime Stories program. The crew from the hospital taped him reading a bedtime story which now plays on the hospital's Skylight TV network in the evenings.

Randy Wells

On November 6, 2009, Randy will host the first Randy Wells Golf Classic in his home town of Belleville, IL. Randy is also a supporter of Cubs catcher Koyie Hill's Big Wish event.
